Perfect Ten
The 10 minute Play Fiesta

From bayside to Chermside. From the beach of South Bank to the Valley of Fortitude. From the Mount of Gravatt to the side of the Port, here’s TEN 10-minute plays about Brisbane; it's drama/comedy, identity/weirdness, it's history/future!

Selected by competition and commission from the NOW/WOW-generation of Brisbane playwrights, Perfect Ten will be performed by a huge ensemble cast – some pretty, some cosmetically challenged, but all mind-numbingly talented. With brand new directors, there’ll be no tired, torturous tale-telling here. It’s all action, laughter, tears and heart-rending sobs. This is bite-sized theatre at its best, boldest and most bizarre. A tang in the tongue. A sting in the tail. Just 10 minutes to tell the story. Tick, tick, tick, tick and tick. Get your tickets soon!

Warnings: Please note this performance contains adult themes, simulated violence and some strong language. Performance is recommended for patrons over 12 years of age.

Voyages and Revelations

Composed and written by Jeremy Picknell and Bernard Houston

Four fascinating musical narratives created by Brisbane composers Jeremy Picknell and Bernard Houston. Singer Kate Schirmer and a host of virtuosic musicians will join Jeremy and Bernard for an evening where musical theatre collides with popular song, and world music intersects European orchestration.

Jeremy and Bernard have worked together since the early '90s. In Melbourne, Jeremy produced his highly successful musical cabaret, Bizarre Bazarre. His show Tilting at Windmills was part of the 2006 emerge Program. Bernard's music has featured in many emerge shows, including Batavia; Getting Betterer All the Time; and Con's Spire. His film credits include Bad Yoghurt, a tropfest 2006/7 finalist.

What's New?
By CJ Cronin

An aging inventor has his hermit-like existence disturbed by the
unexpected arrival of his grandson. Stuck in a non-creative rut he finds the boy has an innate ability to tell good inventions from bad. As the years go by and the boy grows to manhood, visiting periodically, the grandfather attempts to pass on his accumulated wisdom on life. But it is the grandson who holds the true secret of life and carries a secret surprise within him.

Featuring CJ Cronin and Remi Hi.

Directed by CJ Cronin and Jaz Muhling

THE PLAYS...

AT YOUR SERVICE by Felicity Carpenter

A waitress who's a little too friendly, an irate "iron" chef, and some badly abused customers fast wishing they never stepped into this crazy cafe.

FORESTLINK by Patrick Carr

Save the forest or transform the economy; a tiny mountain community argues, laughs, loves and dreams, while buying groceries at the local store. Forestlink cuts to the heart of one of the main dilemmas of modern times.

WUTHERING WAVELL HEIGHTS by Sally Rodda

A modern take on an epic romance, set in Wavell Heights, Brisbane, Australia no less. There's wit. There's humour. There are dastardly deeds and desperate dark desires plus lots and lots of swooning.

ROLAND IN SPACE by Ben Cornfoot

Roland is destined to quest for the Holy Grail but first he needs courage, determination and his mum's permission. We present two scenes from this ilarious and heartwarming homily about a young man finally flying the nest.

Sit at tables or relax on cushions, bring a blanket & picnic if you wish. tea/coffee/bikkies available... and the writers will be there to discuss their works afterwards!

Lexie Turns to Stone
By Patrick Carr

Directed by Amy Ingram. Starring Amanda McErlean, David Knijnenburg, Clem van der Weegen, Liana Lee, Lauryn Cartwright, and Nelle Lee.

Art, money, love and deception on the Gold Coast.

Lonny is a self made man with a shady past. Chris is a Gold Coast sculptor. Chris and Lonny go back a long way. So does Lonny’s wife Lexie. When Lonny commissions his old mate to produce a statue of his wife, their past looms over them. Then the unpredictable and uncontrollable Angelica appears and begins to wreak havoc with everyone’s lives. And what about the special treat they’ve lined up for Chris….. Things start to dissolve in ways no-one expected….

A hilarious look at life and love in the fast lane.

From the writer who was short-listed for the 2006 Premier’s Literary Awards for his previous play “Batavia” (produced by emerge in 2005).

Lie Down Comedy

Created and performed by the EP Comedy Cohort.

NO violence. NO swearing. NO sex! BUT there is a cricket scene.

New comedy that's politically irrelevant, environmentally furious and unashamedly Left-Right-Out. Horse and Hound says "So laid back you'll fall asleep. I know I did."

Con's Spire

by Errol Bray

Conspiracies are funny, aren’t they? This play has 20 or so – and all are hilarious. It also has slow singing, speed speaking, welding, and two gorgeous people in wet bathing suits. Con wants to build a spire, that’s all. It’s an artistic expression! And the neighbours from hell are not having a bar of it. Death threats, two attempted suicides and more wet bathers round off a marvellous night of extremely unusual entertainment.

Warning: contains swearing & strong language. We suggest this play is suitable for a mature audience over the age of 15.

Presented by: Switchboard Arts in association. with The Judith Wright Centre
